How to Take the Stress Out of Math with Online Math Curriculum for Homeschoolers

Today I’m sharing why an online math curriculum might be the solution to your homeschool math woes. We all know that math can be a struggle in our homeschool. It often finds us hopping around from one curriculum to another, hoping for the perfect fit. However, because math concepts build on each other, the struggle many times comes from not having understood a prior concept well enough. This leaves kids falling more and more confused, causing the struggle to become greater as time passes. Pretty soon math seems to be the most contentious part of your day, and everyone is dreading it.

In this post I’m sharing about CTCMath, an online math curriculum that might be just what you’re looking for when it comes to solving the math issue in your homeschool.

Benefits of Using CTCMath Online Math Curriculum

Why would an online math curriculum opposed to a tradition math textbook-type curriculum work in your homeschool? If you know me at all, you know I always prefer the paper versions of almost everything. This does not apply to math curriculum though. Sometimes an online version is just better! Sometimes it can cut the math tensions and build confidence in my kids in ways that I can’t and their math textbook cannot.

Here are some benefits of CTCMath:

  • Kids learn math at your own pace. Homeschoolers, we must drop the grade level stress! Grade levels are something that were created to help the school system better organize themselves. In a family, we don’t need to operate that way. MOST of our kids are at a certain “grade level” in some math topics and another “grade level” in another. We are not cardboard cutout people, we are multi-faceted human beings with strengths and weaknesses. So we should not focus in solely on grade level. Let kids learn at their own pace. Challenge then in the areas they’re weaker and reinforce the areas of their strengths. Celebrate when they’re able to move on to the next challenge!
  • Pause, rewind, or repeat a lesson as much as needed until concept is fully understood. Yes, please! We are so eager to move on and “stay on pace” that we often forget to really make sure our kids have mastered a topic. If a child really does not understand multiplication, division will be that much more difficult. If a child doesn’t understand fractions, percentages will be harder for them. Keep going on a concept until it’s mastered! This is why I love being able to rewind a lesson and do it again and again if needed!
  • Increases confidence in math! All of the reinforcement just creates more confidence in math. If a child has confidence, they will be up for the challenge to keep going!

What I’m Currently Loving About CTCMath Online

  • The teacher! Pat Murray, founder and teacher of CTCMath online is the BEST! He’s been working in the classroom since 1989. He has 10 children of his own, so he knows how to relate to children well. He is great at using short lessons to teach a concept, which helps kids to focus and retain what they are learning before getting bored or distracted.
  • Uses a multi-sensory approach to teaching: a combination of effective graphics and animation synched with the Australian voice of Pat Murray which is fun and easy to listen to–a favorite in our home! Plus there is the opportunity to practice new founded skills through online quizzes and worksheets.

How We Like to Use CTCMath Online Math Curriculum

While CTCMath is a full curriculum, we will be using it as a supplemental resource for areas that need further work. I plan on using CTCMath on days where we need a lighter day of school but still want to continue practicing math concepts that are sometimes easy to slip on. Even through the summer, we’ve been keeping up on math with CTCMath and it’s been painless and easy!

I hope you’ll check out CTCMath. They even have a free trial you can take advantage of!
