3 Reasons Why We’re Using Apologia’s Elementary Chemistry and Physics Curriculum

I shared a few weeks back on what we’re using as our homeschool curriculum this school year. Today, I want to take a closer look at Apologia Elementary Chemistry and Physics curriculum and share why we chose it and what I’m looking forward to. I have shared about Apologia science courses many times and I have yet to be disappointed by one of their courses.

Apologia science is Creation-based, well-researched, challenging, and doable for homeschool families homeschooling a lot of kids or just a few kids. I find it to be flexible to fit to our schedule and adaptable to pick and choose chapters if we are shorter on time.

But why did I choose Apologia’s Elementary Chemistry and Physics for this coming school year? Let’s get into my reasons why…

1. Apologia Elementary Chemistry and Physics is a Full Curriculum

No searching for more resources, no supplementing extra books. Everything we need to complete the course is in the textbook. Of course we can do the experiments, add in the student journal, and find as many books and documentaries and we can, but we don’t need to if we don’t want to do that.

I have friends who love Apologia and they have simply read from the textbook every day as a sort of “read aloud” over lunch or breakfast and their kids enjoyed it immensely!

Some of the topics covered in the course are:

  • atoms
  • molecules
  • simple chemicals
  • the laws of motion
  • energy in its many forms
  • and more!

There are experiments with each module if you choose to complete some or all of them. I love that the experiments are simple and doable and involve very basic supplies you would find around the house, such as:

  • ice
  • toilet paper
  • marshmallows
  • and wax paper

Very low stress for me to plan! Yay!

2. Apologia Elementary Chemistry and Physics Fits Perfectly as a Whole-Family Study

This year I am homeschooling my 11th and 6th grade daughters. The girls are not using the same curriculum, but we are going to be studying the same topics: chemistry! The Apologia Elementary Chemistry and Physics is recommended for K-6th grade, so if you have all elementary kids, this ONE curriculum would be perfect for you.

When you have a wider array of ages in your homeschool, it can be tricky to do family studies, but what I love doing instead of all using the same curriculum is having everyone study the same topic at their own level. This way, there is a ton of crossover and everyone is in the same field.

3. Apologia Elementary Chemistry and Physics is Flexible and Doable

The Apologia Elementary Chemistry and Physics curriculum includes the main text and you can add in a Student Journal OR a Junior Student Journal for your young elementary kids. We are using the Student Journal with my 6th grader. The student journal includes a sample daily schedule if you want to use and follow along. All the lesson planning is finished for you if you choose, which is wonderful!

There are 14 modules and each one takes about two weeks to complete. We will finish most of the modules, but if I would like to, I can go through and omit modules or take a longer amount of time on modules if necessary.

We will read from the textbook and do some of the notebooking activities inside the Student Journals. There are lab experiments so we will complete some of those for each module and then fill in the “Test It Out” lab sheets also included in the journal.

Overall, I am extremely please with how adaptable Apologia’s Elementary Chemistry and Physics is. I have a hard time totally conforming to a curriculum’s lesson plan, so I plan to modify to fit our days, doing about two lessons per week.

I hope you will check out Apologia’s Elementary Chemistry and Physics and let me know in the comments if you have any questions about it!
