Homeschool Lab Science for Your High Schooler: Apologia Self-Paced Chemistry

Today I’m excited to share Apologia Chemistry self-paced course for high school and how this curriculum is helping my daughter accomplish a tough science class at home without stress and a huge cost! Apologia reached out to see if I could check out and review their self-paced chemistry course and having had used their high school courses in the past, I knew this would be a good fit.

Just the other night at dinner a topic came up about a scientific study came up and she was able to share all about it based on what she had learned in biology last year.

What is Apologia Self-Paced Chemistry?

Apologia Chemistry is a course full of experiments, a notebook for your student to follow, and a text. It covers topics like:

Who Is Apologia Self-Paced Chemistry Science For?

Apologia gives the basic example scope for using their curricula as follows:

• 7th grade: General Science
• 8th: Physical Science
• 9th: Biology
• 10th: Chemistry
• 11th: Physics

Apologia recommends Chemistry for grades 10 or 11. We have found their courses to be great, but also challenging so I think 11th grade is perfect.

Here’s how we’ve used Apologia science in high school: Apologia Biology is generally used for 9th-grade studies, we are used it for 10th. I like to combine my high schoolers where I can. So two years ago, my 9th and 11th grader both did Physics together. You can read about our past curriculum line up HERE.

Another thing that makes this course really simple on Mom and teens is the auto-graded tests. These tests give feedback and students are even allowed to take the tests multiple times.

The best thing you can do if you have kids around the same general age group is combine them to use the same course. This is so helpful for moms teaching multiples ages in their homeschool!

How We’re Using Apologia Self-Paced Chemistry This Year

With my older boys graduated, this year I will just be teaching my daughters and they will be in 11th and 6th grade. The Apologia Chemistry course will be too advanced for my 6th grade daughter, BUT I do love to continue teaching my kids the same types of things, just at their own level. So my younger daughter will be going through Apologia’s Young Explorer Chemistry and Physics course. I am really excited for the girls to be learning about the same things at their own level. This encourages so much conversation and crossover in what books we have lying around, the documentaries we watch together, and more.

They can also help each other with the experiments and labs they do, which will be great.

My older daughter will have to complete a little bit of her chemistry course each day in order to finish by May. My younger daughter will go through the curriculum about 2x per week.
