How to Plan Your Homeschool Year: The Best Tools for Moms
Planning your homeschool year can feel like a big task—especially if you’re juggling multiple grade levels, activities, and a full life at home. But with the right tools, creating a plan that fits your family’s needs can be simple and even enjoyable. Whether you’re a seasoned homeschool mom or just starting out, having reliable homeschool planning tools can help you map out your year with clarity and peace. In this post, I’m sharing the tools I turn to year after year to organize our homeschool schedule, track curriculum, and stay focused on what really matters.
Best Homeschool Planning Tools

- Linen Binder: I love to create my planners in a binder opposed to a bound planner. This way I can add pages as needed. Love this binder and it comes in lots of colors.
- Learning Well Forever Planner: I created this planner years ago because I needed something without a ton of fluff but also gave me lots of options. I’ve been using it for 15 years! It’s the last planner you’ll buy!
3. Sharpies: New Sharpies are a must every year because we need those sharp tips, do we not?! Label binder tabs, label stickers and much more.
4. Paper Mate Ink Joy: If I’m looking to color code anything, I love these pens. But I also have several in black that I use for everything.

5. Mr. Sketch Markers: These might be for children. but I absolutely love to use them as highlighters. I pull out the light colors–yellow, pink, green, orange–and give the rest to Vera. They are great highlighters!
6. Cardstock: You’ll need good printer paper, but also good cardstock for printing out your Forever Planner Pages. I print the cover, year-at-a-glance page, and the term planning pages on cardstock.
7. Sharpie Gel Pens: These are great pens for planning!
8. Binder Divider Tabs: This is a great option for setting up your planner. My tabs include: Planning, Fall Term, Winter Term, Spring Term, and High School.
9. Dashboard Planner: I love this planner for my everyday lists. Each page is good for a whole week of planning.
10. HP Printer/Scanner/Copier: I LOVE my printer. It’s wireless, so I can print from anywhere and on my phone. If I need to scan or make copies, I’m good to go!
11. Binder Divider Tabs: Another option for divider tabs, but heavier material in lots of color choices.
12. Large Desk Calendar: Every homeschool family needs a large calendar with all the activities so everyone can see it. Fine if you like digital calendaring, but you NEED a hard copy too!
I hope this helps get organized for the new homeschool year! Happy planning!
