Homeschooling Day in the Life: Lisa, Midwest Homeschooling Mom to Three Children

Day in the life Lisa

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Lisa, Midwest homeschooling mom to three children.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Lisa

Lisa @bruschoolhouse is a Midwest homeschooling mom to three. Her favorite part of homeschooling is the freedom and time it allows the family.

She has been homeschooling for 9 years and is teaching grades 3, 5, and 6 this year. Her best advice to new homeschoolers is to be a present, joyful, and loving mom first, and their teacher second.

Good Morning!

Hi Everyone! My name is Lisa & I’m a 2nd generation homeschool mom on year 9 of teaching my kids. I’m so excited to share a glimpse into our homeschool lifestyle & connect with you all today.

Stay tuned for more on the topics of finding our daily rhythm through the seasons, homeschooling without a designated room, our adventures & more.

Our Daily Rhythm

Daily rhythm Lisa

I love to use the word rhythm rather than routine when referring to our homeschool schedule. The beauty of the lifestyle is freedom & customization. I love that we can pivot when needed & switch things up at any time.

As my crew has gotten older, our rhythm has changed a lot. Here’s an example of one of our days homeschooling a 3rd, 5th & 6th grader:

  • I wake first & have coffee + devotions + get a little work done.
  • The kids wake & get ready + do their 5-10 min individual devotions.
  • We have breakfast together.
  • We complete book work & formal studies.
  • We have time between book work & dinner for friends, nature, extra-curricular activities, interest-based learning, etc.
  • The kids also do 20-30 min of reading a day with their book of choice.
  • We love podcasts during breakfast or in the car— Real Cool History for Kids is our favorite!
  • Fun fact: my mom teaches 7 of her grand kids science weekly. She is a 2nd gen homeschool mom, former x-ray tech, most patient woman alive. 😂 She makes it so engaging & fun — she sends the moms away to go do whatever we want. Such a blessing!

Our School Space

We’ve never really had a designated homeschool space in any of the homes we have lived in. In the early days, we purchased my dream dining room table & that+the natural light & coziness of our living room nearby has always been enough for us.

We also love learning:

  • outside
  • at a coffee shop
  • with friends
  • at our local botanical garden
  • at parks
  • with family & friends
  • in the car (podcasts)
  • while traveling

Here are some snapshots of learning throughout our home, without a designated homeschool room, through the years.

Homeschool Adventures

Homeschool Adventures

The freedom that the homeschool lifestyle brings leaves room for the best adventures! We love planning trips and experiencing new places with family and friends. Near & far! It is definitely one of our priorities in our schedule and our budget!

Thank you so much to Lisa for sharing your family’s day with us!
