Homeschool Day in the Life: Kia, homeschooling mom of five, with a passion for encouraging other moms

Day in the life Kia

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Kia, homeschooling mom of five, who loves encouraging other moms on their homeschooling journey.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Kia

Day in the life Kia

Kia @kindly_kia is a homeschool mom of five, raising her kids in the desert of Arizona with her husband, Courtney, of twelve years. She loves the colors purple & green, organizing hacks, planners, and burgers. She is an extrovert who enjoys encouraging others. Together, Courtney and Kia strive to raise their kids in their Christian faith, which is the foundation of their homeschool.

Kia loves reading parenting books and watching homesteading videos on YouTube. She dreams of living on a small farm with a home that has a basement someday. Basement homes are rare in Arizona.

Every year when October rolls around, Kia excitedly counts down the days until the new Hallmark holiday movies begin to premiere. It’s one of her favorite holiday traditions. You will love following her because she is a fun and friendly neighbor in the Instagram hood!

Breakfast Time

Breakfast time! It’s my favorite meal of the day. Growing up, I always loved Saturdays because my mom would make a full spread for breakfast. It was a nice departure from our pop tarts or cereal meals we quickly ate before rushing off to catch the school bus.

I enjoy bringing my kids to the table first thing in the morning for a hearty meal to start the day off. During our meal we review what’s in store for the day. It helps the kids prepare for the day with the confidence of knowing what the day looks like.

Today our schooling will be in the afternoon. We are currently house hunting and I have to be flexible with our realtors schedule. While I am away with the two youngest kiddos, my older three will complete their morning menu of chores and have free reading and play. These are the things that would usually happen in the afternoon.

Since my husband works from home, he will check in on them and make sure they complete their morning menu first. It’s times like these that I take full advantage of the flexibility of homeschooling.

Daily Handwriting Practice

Handwriting Kia

With my oldest two, Cohen and Kendall, I taught them cursive first. They did well and picked it up with no problem.

During Sunday school and other enrichment activities, they became frustrated writing in cursive because all of their friends and the person leading the class wrote in standard print (manuscript) form.

I finished teaching them cursive and then moved over to teaching them print. Last year we didn’t practice cursive as much as I hoped we would so we are back to practicing it this year.

Overall, I want to put an emphasis on good penmanship both in print and cursive. I am enjoying these super affordable handwriting workbooks from Amazon.

Finding Nature in the City

Our family dreams of living on acres outside the city where we can enjoy having nature in our backyard. While we are still city dwellers, we find simple things like feeding our bird friends and climbing trees to keep us in touch with nature in the meantime.

I use to feel like we could only experience nature outside the city, but then I realized I just wasn’t following my children’s lead. I love how observant they are and the way they take in things I miss because they take time to slow down more.

Morning Basket for Dinner

Morning Basket Kia

Morning basket and burgers!!!

Since we flipped our day around to accommodate house showings this morning, we did our morning basket during dinner. If you have a morning basket, do you sometimes do it later in the day?

For our morning basket we use A Gentle Feast and I enjoy it because it is well laid out. We add in catechism practice and character training during this time.

Before we used A Gentle Feast for morning time, our morning basket mainly consisted of poetry, hymn study and Bible reading. Then I searched for a way to add in the beauty subjects but didn’t want to piece it together myself from various resources.

I love completing our morning basket in the morning because it makes me feel pretty accomplished in a short time. But I have to say that doing it with burgers was fun.

Read Aloud

Ending the day with our Form ll Literature read aloud. What is your current read aloud?

The kids are enjoying “The Secret Garden.” They curl up in blankets or quietly build with Legos and listen. Out of all the things we do, I hope they remember these slow and easy moments together adventuring through a book.
