Homeschooling Day in the Life: Jamie, Homeschooling Mom of Four, On a Journey to Study Every Country in the World Through Books

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.
Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Jamie, homeschooling mom of our, on a journey to study every country in the world through books.
We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!
Meet Jamie

Hi I’m Jamie! I’m a homeschool mom of four kids. Teaching piano lessons in the afternoons and evenings led me to the idea of homeschooling 14 years ago and the rich, Charlotte Mason homeschool lifestyle kept me there. We embarked on a journey to study every country in the world (through books) from 2020 to 2024, exploring geography and history through books, hands-on activities, and field trips. My side passion is finding living books and trying to fit in as many read-alouds as possible. I share free book lists and affordable geography curriculum on my website.
My Day in the Life

My Day in the Life is constantly changing as I adjust to my kids’ needs, but here is a current snapshot. The timetable is fluid and just a guideline for me to move on to the next subject. Some days we hit every subject, and other days we don’t. I do not worry about catching up (I just try not to miss any one thing two weeks in a row). We take our work outside when the weather is comfortable. During the year, we have co-op on one day, so this is for a 4-day school week.
Devotional

I always start my day with prayer, my Bible, and coffee.
Breakfast

The 8:00 read-aloud happens if they’re all awake, however they’re generally all up by 8:45. We read Psalms and Proverbs and sing our hymn and folk song together. Once a week, we do our history notebooking by writing a summary and drawing (or pasting) maps in our notebooks. We also put major events on a fold-out timeline.
History-9:00am

For my 3rd and 5th grader we do history and historical fiction read-alouds. They are welcome to draw, watercolor, or do any handicrafts during my read-alouds. During this time the 8th graders independently do their readings in history, literature, and science, and one daily written narration.
Math-10:00am

I do Algebra I with my twin 8th graders, while my 3rd and 5th graders independently do their math and readings in literature and science.
Language Arts-11:00am

I do one of the following ELA with each child: Spelling, Grammar, Dictation, and Writing. The other three children continue in their independent work when they’re not sitting with me.
Lunch + Beauty Studies

During Lunch we cycle through hymn study, artist/picture study, composer/music study, and poetry.
Afternoon-12:30pm

Most days I do a Chinese lesson with each child. After that the kids usually do something outdoors like gardening, playing in the yard, tennis courts, or a nature walk. If we choose an indoor activity instead, we sometimes go to the library program, do a sewing project, play board games, or do an art project.
Mid-afternoon we do a read-aloud with a snack, and then most days I give a piano lesson to one child.
Evening Run-Around

Evenings can be really busy. I make dinner and we all eat before running the kids to their activities which include ballet, rock climbing, baseball, gymnastics, and robotics.
Cozy Home

Our days are full and happy. Every day is unique and I record my favorite things from that day in a 5-year journal. If I start to fret that the house isn’t neat and clean, I read this Tolkien quotation:
“That house was a perfect house whether you liked food or sleep or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all.”
Happy Homeschooling!
