Homeschooling Day in the Life: Ashleigh, Southern Homeschooling Mom of Three Children

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.
Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Ashleigh, southern homeschooling mother of three children.
We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!
Meet Ashleigh

I’m a southern mama of 3 nearing our 4th year of schooling at home. In my old life, I was an anxiety ridden workaholic with substance abuse issues, and the Lord gave me a whole new life 10 years ago. Now, I’m a sober (peace filled) wife to an amazing man and we have a 9yo son, a 4.5yo daughter and a 2yo son. It’s a wild ride with my bunch of littles, and I absolutely love it. My husband and I have leaned so much into the freedoms that homeschooling provides that we now both have our own businesses. While leading our children towards Jesus is our most important mission, we also are very convicted to teach them about entrepreneurship and the possibilities that we never imagined were possible when we were children. We’ve experienced so much of the Lord’s goodness with the opportunities we have shepherding our kids at home and I love encouraging other women who are doing the same!
Breakfast Together

We begin our day around 8am with breakfast together, homemade as much as possible. Not feeling rushed out of the door for anything in the mornings is one of the greatest blessings to us! I like to fuel up with a nutritious breakfast, electrolytes, and protein coffee to prepare myself for the day ahead.
Next we get everyone dressed and put together. Even though most of our days are spent at home, this is a habit that I believe to be a healthy one! While a PJ day happens every now and again, I’ve been pretty diligent to avoid making it habitual. Totally a personal preference.
Morning Basket

Once everyone is ready, we gather in our school room to begin our morning basket. This is how we survive schooling with an energetic toddler! When he’s with us all of the children can play with things like magnet tiles and blocks or stuffed animals and dolls while they listen to Bible reading, participate in catechism, engage in oral grammar lessons, and do family read aloud time. We cozy up on the small couch in our school room or the kids hang out in a homemade fort during this time. This usually takes an hour to an hour and a half and then it’s nap time for our little guy.
Focus Work

Once the little one is down, we do what I call our focus work. These are the math, reading, and science lessons that require me and the others to focus on learning skills without a toddler climbing on the table. My preschooler looks at books, traces handwriting pages, practices writing her name, and plays when I’m helping my 3rd grader.
Free Time

Once the school day is done, the kids get a bit of screen time while I get lunch ready and get a little work done. By the time we are wrapping up lunch our toddler is awake and ready to eat! When everyone is done, they usually head outside to play or visit my grandparents next door. This point in the day would be considered their free time!
Evening Activities

Lastly we have chores like taking care of our chickens or picking up toys in the yard, supper, and either church or baseball. My husband coaches and my oldest son plays and me and the littles love cheering them on and hanging out with our family friends at the field!
Then it’s time for baths and bedtime! While many evenings have us busy, we try to have a family worship night once a week after bath time where we come together, sing praise, and have a family devotion before bed. We all pray together every night and I absolutely can’t sleep unless I’ve kissed each of my babies!
