Homeschooling Day in the Life: Sonya, Book-Loving, Second-Generation, Homeschooling Mom of 3

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Sonya, book-loving, second-generation, homeschooling mom to three children.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Sonya

Hi, my name is Sonya! I am a second-generation homeschool mom to three–third grade, first grade, and a toddler. Collecting books, sharing book reviews on my Instagram page, and reading books are some of my favorite hobbies. Basically, books are my hobby!

My favorite subject to teach is history. I enjoy using literature-based curriculum whenever possible. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into our daily rhythms.

Waking Up Early

Waking up early before my kids is a rhythm I have had to work hard to create. It’s these quiet moments before the noise, where I enjoy reading my Bible and nonfiction book and getting some work done before the breakfast rush.

A Slow Start

The kids wake up around 7AM and are allowed to grab a granola bar and snuggle up with some books before breakfast at 8AM. After breakfast we all do clean up and chores before starting our schoolwork.

Morning Time

Our morning time begins at 9AM. We spend an hour (or more) together having devotions, Bible memory, singing hymns, watching World Watch News, and reading our several read alouds: one for history, one biography/true story, and one for fun!

Book Work

After morning time, we jump into our book work which includes math and language arts. I usually worm on math with the boys at the table together and then individually for their language arts while they take turns playing with their toddler sister. Usually we break for lunch in between somewhere and finish what’s left in the early afternoon.

Afternoons

Afternoons are for Science lessons or individual interests like art, reading, or playing outside. We usually all have some individual quiet time as well.

Encouragement

Homeschooling has been such a huge blessing to our family, but is definitely, not without its challenges. While dealing with chronic illness for the last ten years, these are a few things I have learned and hang on to each day:

  • When it comes to curriculum, simple is usually better and perfectly okay. Pick a subject, grab a book, and curl up together on the couch. We have learned more from reading chapter books together than textbooks.
  • Try not to compare yourself, your kids, your homeschool space, or your capacity for activities to those around you. Everyone’s at a different place and Instagram, especially, never shows the whole story.
