Homeschooling Day in the Life: Chelsea, Former Elementary School Teacher, Turned Homeschool Mom of Two

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Chelsea, elementary school teacher, turned homeschool mom of two.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Chelsea

Hi, I’m Chelsea. A former elementary school teacher turned homeschool mom, and we’re wrapping up our fourth year of homeschooling. Our homeschool style is eclectic and flexible, and I love changing things up with the seasons to keep learning fun and realistic for our family. I’m passionate about hands-on lessons, practical learning, and finding creative ways to make homeschool work in real life.

Slow Morning Start

Our mornings are slow and simple. My kids get themselves ready and make their own breakfast while I have coffee, eat breakfast, and read a book. During this time, they usually listen to an audiobook. We love having a gentle start to our day.

Family Learning Time

We officially start our school day at 10:00 with family-style learning at the whiteboard. This is our time to come together and work through lessons as a group before everyone branches off into their individual work.

Independent Work Block

We move into independent lessons. Some subjects are done together, some are completed independently, and I bounce back and forth between both kids to help as needed.

Lunch + Read Alouds

At lunchtime, we slow down and gather for read-alouds. While the kids eat, I read aloud from our current novel study and a history selection we’re working through together.

Afternoon Lessons

After lunch, we jump back into independent work. Right now, my kids are using IXL as part of our test prep so they can get comfortable with online learning platforms and the kind of language they may see on standardized testing.

End of the School Day

By 2:00, our formal school day is done. I usually head outside with a book while my kids play with the neighborhood kids. It’s one of my favorite parts of the day and a nice way for all of us to unwind.
