Homeschool Day in the Life: Nakia, homeschool mom in the city
A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.
Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Nakia, homeschool mom to three little ones, who homeschools in New York City!
Regardless of our homeschool approach, how long we’ve been homeschooling, or how old our kids are, we can all learn and be inspired by one another. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!
Meet Nakia

Carving Out Time for Yourself
Good morning learning well community! I’m Nakia from @_nakiawashington. I’m super excited to be sharing our homeschool day in life with you! Before we dive into all the homeschool goodness let’s chat about us mamas!
HOW DO YOU CARVE OUT TIME FOR YOURSELF?
One of the best things I implemented in my day is waking up before my children. Now, I’ve always been a morning person but it’s totally different being bombarded at 6:30am by 3 kids! ?
I try to wake up anywhere between 4-5am to get a jumpstart! I typically spend this time with Jesus. I realized over the years that I can only pour out what is in me! I need him to fill me up so I can pour kindness, love and grace into my children.
Sometimes I pray and read, or sometimes I just sit and rest in God’s presence while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. And guess what? Sometimes I need more me time so I have my children play with some magna-tiles or play-doh so I can sip some tea quietly!
I encourage you today to carve out some time for yourself and do whatever it is that brings you peace & happiness. It is so important as homeschool parent! I went from drowning to swimming by just that small change!
School Time
We often start off our homeschool day with my son reading to us from his Bible. Then we move along to Montessori activities.
If I can be honest, every homeschool day looks different for us! I don’t follow a homeschool schedule. I’m a former type A mama with the perspective that things had to go my way or the high way! However, with tiny humans, things often rarely go as I plan.
I learned to let go of what I feel school should like, and go with their flow and interest, with some structure of course! This won’t work for everyone but that’s the beauty of homeschooling! It lends itself to finding what fits your children best.
Math time! We love incorporating Montessori activities in our homeschool.
Independent Reading Time
Independent reading time right before lunch. ❤️ Today turned out to be a relaxed day for us! My son didn’t feel too good when he woke up and after I gave him some tea he said he felt better. So our homeschool day has been slow!
Everyday looks different
I hope you guys enjoyed seeing snippets of our homeschool day! Today wasn’t a full day but that’s okay! With homeschooling every day looks a little bit different. My children did enjoy a lot of open ended play which is just as important as sit down work.
If you would like to follow along our homeschool journey, you can find me @_nakiawashington.
Thank you so much to Nakia for sharing your family’s day with us!
