A Day in the Life of Homeschool Mama Jessica

Here’s a little look at the Day in the Life of Jessica, mama to one, pursuing a fun, child led, delight driven education! At Learning Well, we understand that homeschooling doesn’t look the same for all of us. We understand it doesn’t have to either for us to learn and glean good things from each other. Each Wednesday, on our Instagram feed, we feature a new homeschool mama to take over the feed and show us what her day looks like.

Some of us homeschool for religious reasons and that inspires our homeschool days. Some of us homeschool from the road and never do school in the same place twice. We might have been homeschooling for years and years. Or we may have just begun our journeys. We understand that those details don’t really matter though. The common thread that binds us all together is our desires to educate our children differently.

We might all homeschool differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days.

Day in the Life of Homeschool Mama Jessica

Hi! I’m Jessica, a graphic designer turned homeschool mom. I am the face behind The Waldock Way where I share our homeschool life and more information for pursuing a fun, child led, delight driven education. Kevin is my husband and we have an only child who we have been homeschooling since the beginning. Emily is 7 years old and in second grade. We live in Florida and take full advantage of the homeschool lifestyle by doing Disney school as often as possible.

Morning Basket

I am not a morning person. I have tried and I will just never be a happy person before 8am unless we are heading to Disney and even then I sleep on the drive. My daughter on the other hand wakes up at 100 miles an hour ready to go. Mornings were never fun in house until two key concepts came into play: strewing and morning basket time.

I stay up late at night so I try to always strew something before bed, that way my daughter wakes up to something fun, engaging, and new to discover. This keeps her busy while I slowly start my morning. I get ready, caffeinate, and make breakfast in peace.

Once I have her breakfast made we sit down to do our morning basket time. This is the one thing we do everyday no matter what (unless we have to leave the house earlier). As long as we get our morning basket done each day I feel like I have accomplished something as a homeschool mom.

Table Time

My daughter is still young. She is seven years old and in second grade. Because of that while we do academics we don’t force much. We are very child led and love unit studies. Most of the curriculum we use are things I have specifically written based on her interests. So when I say next we do table work it is definitely not as boring as it sounds. 

Table time for us is just anything that requires a pencil and paper. And honestly is doesn’t even always happen at the table. Sometimes we do our work on the floor and sometimes we take it outside. We almost always do some form of math and then whatever unit study we are working on at the time.

Lunch

We have a quick lunch normally something simple like a sandwich and then a few minutes of quiet time.

We don’t eat together (judge all you want) but as a parent of an only child you are always ON and I need alone time. So for 30 minutes she eats her lunch and watches an educational television show. After one show she reads independently for at least 15 minutes.

I spend this time eating a quick lunch and doing household chores like dishes or laundry. I also try to listen to an audio book or a podcast while I work.

Afternoon Activities

After quiet time we reconvene for an afternoon activity. After some quiet time I am rejuvenated so I can put in a little more effort and find this to be the best time to do those more involved things.

Our afternoon activities can include things like science experiments, nature walks, playing games, baking, poetry teatime, or our co-op.

We prefer to wait until my husband is home to do the afternoon activity so he can join us but with his sporadic schedule that doesn’t always happen.

Free Time

Emily has free playtime until dinner. This normally gives her anywhere between two and three hours to play with anything she would like. Her current favorite is Barbie or Lego.

After we eat we normally watch a movie or play a game as a family. Sometimes Emily will ask to resume playing in which case we get to watch a grown up show or movie, but that very rarely happens.

Alone Time

Once everyone is in bed my alone time starts. The house is quiet and it’s the only time I can get any real computer work done.

I use this time to jot down what we did that day and then either do my college assignments, write a blog post, film a video, or reply to messages. Sometimes I just need a break and I will spend my alone time binge watching a show on Netflix.

The last thing I do before I go to bed is make sure I strew something for Emily in the morning. I will regret that big time if I forget.
