Inside a Homeschool Forensics Lab: What It Looks Like in Real Life

When I first saw that Apologia offered a homeschool Forensics lab course, I knew it would be the perfect fit for our high schooler who wanted something different for science, as she had already finished biology and chemistry. It’s hands-on, fascinating, and very real-world. But I also had questions—what does this actually look like in a homeschool setting? Could we really pull it off at home?
Now that we’ve been working through the course, I wanted to share a peek inside our experience and what it’s really like to run a homeschool forensics lab.
First Things First: A Word of Caution
Before we dive in, it’s really important to note: this course is only recommended for 11th and 12th graders. It can be graphic and sometimes even a little disturbing, depending on your student’s sensitivity. The labs cover things like blood spatter analysis, decomposition, and other crime scene elements.

So while it’s a fantastic course, it’s not for younger students. Use discretion and know your teen before jumping in. My daughter is a senior, age 17.

Setting Up for Success for Homeschool Forensics Lab
One of the best decisions I made was purchasing the optional lab kit. You can gather the materials yourself, but the kit made things so much easier—everything was ready to go, labeled, and homeschool-friendly. For me, it took away the stress of hunting down random supplies and let us dive right in.
It’s all organized in baggies for each lab so when it’s time for a lab, Sophia can grab what she needs without wasting time searching. Having a dedicated space for science experiments (a table that can get messy without worry) has also been a big help.

A Peek at the Labs
Here’s the fun part—the labs are so engaging.
Some of our favorites so far:
- Fingerprint Analysis – comparing different types of prints and practicing dusting techniques.
- Fiber Analysis – using microscopes to study different fibers and learn how investigators can match them to clothing or textiles.
- Blood Spatter Labs – understanding angles and impact (this is where that caution about “gory” comes in!).
Each lab is tied directly to the lesson material, so students aren’t just reading about forensic science—they’re actually experiencing it. This hands-on approach makes the content stick and sparks great discussions.

Time Commitment
One of my initial concerns was how much time this would take. The good news: it’s very manageable.
- Lessons: Around 30–45 minutes of reading or video instruction.
- Labs: Depending on the activity, anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Some are quick and simple; others require more setup and clean-up.
It’s not an “everyday” science grind, but it’s steady and substantial enough to count as a full high school credit.
Keeping It Manageable
A few tips that have worked for us:
- Spread it out. We usually do one lab per week, which keeps it from feeling overwhelming.
- Use the lab kit. Seriously—it’s worth every penny.
- Be prepared for the content. Talk openly with your teen before starting—yes, it’s science, but some of it is intense. My student enjoys the realism, but I know it wouldn’t be the right fit for every teen.
Final Thoughts
Apologia’s Forensics course has been such an engaging and worthwhile addition to our high school science lineup. It’s rigorous, fascinating, and very memorable—but it’s also intense and best reserved for 11th and 12th graders who are mature enough to handle the sometimes gory subject matter.
If you’re looking for a science course that will capture your teen’s interest, build real-world skills, and give them something to talk about long after the lesson is over, this is a fantastic option.
