Christmas School: Creative Themes and Curriculum Ideas for a Joyful December Homeschool

December is such a magical month to slow down and make your homeschool feel extra meaningful. Instead of pushing through the usual routine, it can be a wonderful time to shift gears and focus on Christmas-themed learning—studying the story of Jesus’ birth, exploring holiday traditions around the world, or even baking and crafting as part of your lessons.

If you’ve ever wanted to bring more festivity, faith, and connection into your December homeschool days, this post is for you. I’m sharing simple Christmas homeschool themes and curriculum ideas to help you create a joyful, intentional learning rhythm during the holiday season—without adding stress or extra prep.

Themes to Study This Christmas in Your Homeschool

These Christmas homeschool themes can be as light or in-depth as you want—perfect for weaving together history, literature, music, art, and faith during the holiday season.

Here are a few favorite ideas to inspire your Christmas school plans:

The Nutcracker
Study the story behind The Nutcracker ballet, learn about Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music, and explore the cultural traditions that inspired it. Kids can listen to the soundtrack, watch a performance, or even create Nutcracker-inspired art and writing projects.

Christmas Around the World
Take a trip across the globe right from your homeschool room! Learn how different countries celebrate Christmas—what they eat, how they decorate, and the traditions they hold dear. This is a fun way to connect geography, world cultures, and faith while reminding kids that Christmas is celebrated in many unique ways.

A Christmas Carol
Dive into Charles Dickens’ classic tale of redemption and compassion. Older kids can read the story or watch a film adaptation, while younger students can explore the themes of kindness, gratitude, and generosity. This theme pairs beautifully with writing reflections or creative retellings.

Colonial Christmas
Step back in time to see how early Americans celebrated Christmas. Learn about colonial-era decorations, recipes, and handmade gifts. This theme ties in naturally with American history and gives kids a chance to explore how Christmas traditions have evolved. You can do this type of study with any time period in history, but we did Colonial times years ago and it was so fun. Since we’re studying early American history again this year, I think we’ll do this again!

Christmas Carols
Study the stories and origins behind beloved Christmas hymns and carols. Read the lyrics, learn the history of each song, and reflect on the message it carries. You can even turn this into a family sing-along or mini music study during Advent.

The Symbols of Christmas
Ever wonder why we decorate with evergreen trees, lights, or stars? Explore the meaning behind classic Christmas symbols and how they point us back to Christ. Kids can create crafts, write short essays, or make a “Symbols of Christmas” scrapbook.

The Nativity Story
Center your homeschool around the true meaning of Christmas—the birth of Jesus. Read the Gospel accounts, learn about the historical setting of Bethlehem, and bring the story to life through art, narration, or a family nativity play.

Holiday Baking & Christmas Traditions
Turn your kitchen into a classroom! Use Christmas baking to practice real-world math skills, follow recipes, and talk about family traditions. You can even connect it to geography by making traditional Christmas treats from different countries.

The Names of Jesus
Focus your December homeschool on who Jesus is by studying the many names and titles given to Him in Scripture—Prince of Peace, Emmanuel, Light of the World, Good Shepherd, and more. Each day read a Bible passage, reflect on what that name reveals about His character, and create simple journaling or art activities to go along with it. This theme makes a beautiful Advent study for the whole family.
