Homeschooling Day in the Life: Briana, Homeschool Mom of Four Children Who Loves to Incorporate Family Subjects

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Briana, homeschooling mom to four children, who loves to incorporate family subjects.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Briana

Brianna @brimommyof4 and her husband Brad are the parents of 4 children. They are a Charlotte Mason inspired family that believes homeschooling starts the moment your child is born. However, where book work is concerned, they have been at it for 11 years now.

Their “why we homeschool” is simple—they want to raise God-fearing, hardworking men and women who love to learn, but most of all, love the Lord.

Mornings

I like to start my mornings quietly around 7:30 — coffee in hand, spending time with Jesus and in the Word before the kids wake up. Between 8:00 and 9:00, we ease into our day with chores — what I call the 5 Bs: Brush teeth/Body (get dressed), clean Bathroom, clean Bedroom, Breakfast, and Bible.

Schoolwork

Around 9:00–9:30, depending on the flow of things, we begin our schoolwork. Our oldest three do their math on their tablets — we’re currently using Teaching Textbooks, and they’re really enjoying it! While the older ones work on math, I help the youngest with his little school book. He also has a phonics app on his tablet he enjoys.  For reading and language arts, we’ve been using Sandy Queen for the past couple of years and absolutely love it.

Read Aloud

After lunch, we gather for a read-aloud — often while folding laundry — and finish up any language or math that wasn’t completed earlier. We rotate science and history and do them together as a family. I love using our thrifted American History encyclopedia set and the many science books I’ve collected over the years.

Science

We like to keep science hands-on and curiosity-led, following the kids’ interests and tying lessons to real life whenever possible. I will say, now that our oldest is 14, she has taken a real interest in marine life, so she’s started a Marine Biology course by Barbara Whitman.

Afternoons

Our afternoons are a finish-for-all kind of time — we have quiet reading, I make another pot of coffee, and everyone works to wrap up what needs to be done. Then we do a quick cleanup before Daddy gets home. Chores are an essential part of our home — I believe they build strong character and a good work ethic. It all starts right here at home.

Encouragement

Also, let me just say — homeschooling is hard, chaotic, and normally never quiet. There are many sibling quarrels, tears, and moments where patience runs thin. But I have Jesus and His amazing grace. I know I will never regret this precious time with my four babies, and I thank God for these days — even the hard ones.
