Homeschooling Day in the Life: Sonya, Homeschooling Mom to Three Children, Living in the Blue Ridge Mountains

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Sonya, homeschooling mom to three children, living in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Sonya

Hi! My name is Sonya and I’m a mama to three delightful children and wife to my hardworking husband. Our home is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, a place where my own roots run deep. I love good books, handmade gifts, cream in my coffee, and a thrifting adventure.

We’re midway through our ninth year of learning at home and I feel like each year is a new opportunity for growth! I can say with confidence that I have never doubted the value in home education. It’s a good and beautiful thing to do life with my children every day.

Slow + Quiet Mornings

Mornings around here are slow and quiet. We are not early risers and I love that we can rest as much as needed after a busy weekend or a late night. We often spend time reading individually until everyone is up for the day.

Morning Collective

Our homeschool day begins with us gathering in the living room for morning collective or morning time. Morning Collective for us includes Bible, current events, history/geography, and science. We often have a Bible memory passage that we go over together and I like to have some type of devotional book or missionary story to read as well. World Watch News is our favorite source for current events + world news. History almost always includes a read aloud or two along with some additional textbook type material and we approach science in much the same way.

Notebooking

Once a week I like to devote some time to written narration or notebooking pages.

We also occasionally have a tea time which includes tea (of course!), snacks, and a read aloud.

Individual Studies

After a break to run off some energy, we move into individual studies like language arts and math. I’m available to help as needed but we are working towards independence in these subjects.

Afternoons

We generally try to wrap up our lessons by early afternoon and the rest of the day is free for play, crafts, reading, and a few basic chores. It’s also important to me that we all spend some time outside!

Extracurriculars

We do have one afternoon set aside for guitar lessons, and another afternoon devoted to our homeschool play group. I know we will likely add in more extracurricular in the high school years but for now, we love our flexible schedule!

Homeschooling has been such a gift in so many ways. It’s allowed us to pursue interests that may lead to career paths. We’ve been able to grow God-given talents through time and intention. We’re learning problem-solving and relationship building daily.

God has been so gracious to lead our family to homeschooling and even more kind to walk with us every step of the way.
