Homeschooling Day in the Life: Maggie, Homeschooling Mom of Five, and Previous Second Grade Teacher

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.
Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Maggie, homeschooling mom of five and previous second grade teacher, living in Nebraska.
We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!
Meet Maggie

Maggie @countingcures is a homeschooling mom of 5 living in Omaha, Nebraska. She’s been homeschooling for 7 years, but prior to that was a 2nd grade teacher.
Her favorite part of homeschooling is learning about her kids in a way she didn’t know them before, watching sibling bonds flourish, and getting to live life at a pace that is more conducive to God’s design for childhood and family life.
After years of letting fear and insecurity creep in, she finally feels so convicted by the joy, peace and beauty of homeschooling!
Good Morning!

Hi homeschool mamas! My name is Maggie (@countingcures) and we are a family of five (ages 3-11) who recently moved from Colorado to Omaha, Nebraska.
When I was a 2nd grade teacher, I never would have thought I would one day be a homeschool mom, but when my oldest was 5 we took time to pray about where God was calling our children to go to school…and homeschool became abundantly clear. Scary, and I still didn’t fully desire it, but His nudge was too strong to not listen to 😉
Those first years were filled with a lot of fears and insecurities surrounding how to stumble through answering every critical and skeptical question thrown our way. Plus my teacher mind was constantly being tempted into comparing our homeschool with traditional school.
It’s now seven years later and I am SO grateful God melted those fears away and has replaced them with conviction beyond doubt, steadfast JOY, and unwavering peace. I feel humbled every day that He chose us for this hidden GEM of motherhood. I mean, getting to witness, learn from and love on these sweet souls He has bestowed on us EVERY day of their fleeting childhood? An invitation to slow down and do LIFE together? A pure gift.
Welcome to our day in the life!
As we start our day together, let’s remember: “The daily mundane is holy ground because the ordinary tasks of a monotonous Monday are where we meet our Maker.”–Sarah Mackenzie, Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace
Valuing Our Children
Stepping outside of the box of our academic “Day in the Life” to share one of our other things we like to teach our kids on a daily basis…their value, dignity, and magnanimity of soul!
In a world that sings constant praises of achievements- from academic awards, to test scores, to medals and trophies, I feel there is a lack of love and attention given to WHO a child is, who they are becoming, and his or her efforts towards growing in virtue.
What do you find helpful in striking a balance between praising the achievements while emphasizing the most important thing…the dignity of a child?
Do you ever imagine what our world might be like if we spent as much time on the spiritual and moral growth of a child as we do the outward achievement growth?
The Importance of Encouragement
I will forever be grateful for the moms who have spoken of the truth, goodness and beauty in their lives when they are living out something God has called them to. Having a sisterhood of encouraging one another’s intuitions and nudges from the Holy Spirit is what has helped me to continue to have the courage to live out His will for my family many times.
Even when you feel apprehension to radiate the joy He’s put in your life because your days look different than everyone else’s, you never know who is watching or listening that needs the consolation of your experience in that moment. @countingcures
Thank you so much to Maggie for sharing your family’s day with us!
