Homeschooling Day in the Life: Lizzy, curriculum creator and mom to two boys

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.
Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Lizzy, homeschooling mama to two boys, and curriculum creator.
We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!
Meet Lizzy

Lizzy @lizzyloveshealth is a wife and homeschool mom who loves to read and continue learning! She is also the writer and creator of the newly launched literature-based Oklahoma history curriculum called Pioneer Spirit!
Lizzy loves reading, studying natural health and being in nature with her family. She lives an intentional life, that’s spent in her home making food from scratch, and fermenting foods. She also loves creating community with other homeschool moms through a neighborhood PE for homeschoolers. Lizzy also hosts a homeschool moms bible study, which is centered around the table and good food!
Good Morning!

Good Morning! I’m @lizzyloveshealth and I’m so honored to share with you today. As with most homeschool moms, our routine has changed over the years and this year is no exception. What’s made the biggest difference for me is having a morning rhythm for myself before my sons get up. They are older now Brooks (13) and Sullivan (9) so they can wake up and have breakfast on their own, which leaves me to take care of myself first thing.
I wake up at 6am and my husband and I drink water and talk about our day. Then I make him a lunch to go because we are both on a gut-healing diet called Gaps. He leaves by 7:15 and then I get out my Bible and non-fiction books I’m reading and light a candle or turn on the diffuser. After that I do a detoxing coffee enema, shower and get dressed for the day.
I love having on my makeup, clean clothes and my hair done for the day before we start our homeschool. In the winter months, I let my boys sleep as late as 9am (except on Thursdays when we have co-op). This routine for me is new this year and even though it pushed our school start time later, it’s been worth it for everyone. I can’t express just how peaceful and prepared I feel having a long morning to myself, focused on what matters most (time in the word).
Read Aloud

Our homeschool mornings begin with read-aloud time. We review our scripture memory cards, our Louvre art cards, read our Oklahoma history book, our nutrition curriculum called Home Grown Nutrition, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy (economics & inflation) and a missionary story from the series Christian Heroes Then and Now. We are reading about C. S. Lewis right now.
Mid-morning we either cut up fresh fruit or bake bread or sourdough crackers together! I love being together in the kitchen, making sure we fuel our bodies with nutrient dense foods.
My younger son starts a fire for us and then rides his flying turtle around the living room as I read. He has to be moving!
Community with Homeschool Moms

I host homeschool moms for lunch twice a month and it’s a wonderful part of our homeschool community! The kids play and the moms eat a delicious potluck lunch and talk about our reading. There’s so much we do for our kids every day and this is just for the moms. We build each other up and encourage each other! It’s my favorite time to host and open our home to friends. This is also great socialization for our kids.
Individual Lessons

After our read aloud together, we split up into individual lessons. I work with my younger son on his phonics, math, handwriting, and co-op homework (science and language arts). Then I help my older son or check his math. We added in co-op this year and we have loved it. It’s just two classes and lots of like-minded families. My oldest son Brooks works on his computer because his assignments are on Google classroom. He does his homework, reading and also an online personal finances course by Dave Ramsey!
Field Trips

We love to travel around our state and explore parks and historical sites! My mom actually did a lot of the same field trips with me and my sisters, which brings back such wonderful memories.
We love hiking with friends during the cooler months and then once the weather warms up we are kayaking, floating and swimming with friends as many afternoons as possible!
Homeschooling gives us the freedom every day to a slow rhythm, quality time, not feeling rushed or hurried and living intentional every day! We get to enjoy good books, time with friends and time in nature. It’s the very best life and I would choose it again and again. I love our life and am so grateful to be able to home educate.
Thank you so much to Lizzy for sharing your family’s day with us!
