Homeschooling Day in the Life: Kristin, Homeschooling Mom to Two Girls, Living on Prince Edward Island in Canada

Day in the life Kristin

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Kristin, homeschooling mom to two girls, living on Prince Edward Island in Canada.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Kristin

Kristin @from_kristin_homeschool is a homeschooling mom of two girls, ages 13 and 11. She is a former teacher who loves learning along with her kids. Her favorite things are reading together and spending time outside, preferably at the beach.

She is married to an RCMP officer (yes a mountie like on When Calls the Heart!), and lives on the beautiful island of PEI, Canada.

Late Morning Homeschooling

Sometimes in the online homeschool world it can be easy to think you’re not doing it right if your day looks different than other people’s. But we all need to find what works for us and sometimes that changes with the season we’re in.

We used to have early risers but now our kids are older and have activities later in the evening. They stay up later reading. Things have shifted. But I want to prioritize their sleep as preteens and teens like I did when thy were kids because it’s still important!

For this reason, we don’t force ourselves to be morning people! Our days have adjusted to a later start. The second slide here shows a loose idea of how our morning and afternoon runs.

Supper is not always at the same time. It largely depends on my husband shifts and what activities we have but the girls and I always eat together.

I hope this helps you realize you can set your rhythm and routine to suit your family needs!

Reading Together

Reading together

My favourite part of homeschooling and our days together is reading together. It brings me such great joy and, honestly, it’s where I most see interest spark in certain topics.

So often we will be reading a historical fiction book together and it will spark our interest in something that we will look into further. That usually leads to nonfiction books about the topic and, when possible, videos. Some of best discussion come from these readings!

For example, right now I’m reading “Jasper and the Riddle of Riley’s Mine” with my younger daughter. We’ve watched videos about gold panning and did virtual tours of Barkerville – an old mining town near where we used to live in British Columbia.

We also printed off a map of the area and the routes people likely took during this gold rush and we got a few books about the gold rush, including “What Was the Gold Rush”. We love the “Who Was” and “What Was” series!

I absolutely love learning history this way! (And it was my least favourite subject in school!). I’m so happy to make it come alive like this for my girls!

The Benefits of Nature School

Every second Thursday we get to go to Nature School where the kids learn outdoor skills, survival skills, can earn badges, and get time just to play in the woods.

This has quickly become a highlight of our week. I feel so light and peaceful when we are there. It feels like it’s what childhood should be like – playing outside in the woods for hours!

One of my girls has gotten quite skilled at lighting a fire without a farro road and she’s quite proud of herself!

Thank you so much to Kristin for sharing your family’s day with us!
