Homeschooling Day in the Life: Kellyn, Homeschooling Mom to Five Children, With a Passion for Educational Philosophy and Reform

Day in the Life Kellyn

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Kellyn, homeschooling mom to five children, with a passion for educational philosophy and reform.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Kellyn

Meet Kellyn

Kellyn @table.folk and her family live in southwest Missouri. She and her husband have been married nearly 15 years and have five children ages 13, 12, 10, & 8 year old twins. They are both originally from the Arizona desert but about four years ago decided to trade in the dirt and cacti for wildflowers and jersey cows.

They both have a strong passion for educational philosophy and reform. Her husband has worked in the world of classical education for over 15 years and they have been homeschooling from the very beginning. They have been strongly influenced by the works of Charlotte Mason and her philosophies are the backbone of their homeschool.

Kellyn has a small farm and they spend a lot of time outside with their animals. She also helps run a local nature school, contributes her writing to the Wild+Free Monthly Bundles, and offers in person and on-line coaching for other homeschooling mothers.

Good Morning!

Good Morning Mamas!

Our homeschool journey has been primarily focused on the nurturing of whole persons- meaning lots of time outside, lots of hard work and service, and a high focus on the great ideas and the great conversation. And ultimately helping our children understand where they fit in the great created order of this world.

Charlotte Mason and the ideas of a true liberal arts education have been the backbone of our homeschool. I can’t wait to share more with you today!

The Purpose of Education

Purpose of Education

Education comes from the Latin word, educare (e-du-ca-re) meaning to lead out of. But lead out of what exactly?

Ultimately children, well all humans actually, need to be continually led out of ourselves. We must engage our minds in a way that is continually pointing outward, to the truth outside of us. We need to form eyes that see the beauty and handiwork of our Creator and the interconnected relationship of it all. To know our created order and the responsibilities of our role as steward.

Wee need to interact with the greatest minds and ideas and participate in the great and ever-unfolding conversation. It’s important to see God’s will through history, good and bad, and to know the nuanced and complex rippling effect this has had on who and where we are. We have to be able to see suffering, and feel with the empathy of a thousand perspectives. To see beauty and give praise; to understand how and why it all works together to paint the tapestry of life before us.

Education is so much more than book work and curriculum. It is the calling of all. It is to remember how to be a human.

The Description of a Teacher

Philosopher. Guide. Friend.

These are the words Charlotte Mason uses to describe the teacher. It is easy to fall into the pit of comparison and fear. “I don’t know enough to teach my kids.” But this description frees the mother to come along side her children and partake of the feast together. If your homeschool is lacking joy, I highly encourage you to step back and dive in.

  • Prioritize enrichments- read alouds, nature walks, nature journaling, poetry, composer study, art. (And mama, participate. Paint that watercolor flower. Start your own nature journal. You are also a soul in need of meaning and beauty.)
  • Prioritize the things that bring you all together. A child is never too old for a read aloud or a fairy tale.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You never will. They don’t even need all the answers. They need to learn how to live and love rightly. And you are by far the best suited for that job.

Thank you so much to Kellyn for sharing your family’s day with us!
