Homeschooling Day in the Life: Courtney, Homeschooling Mom of Three That Took the Leap from Public School

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Courtney, a homeschooling mom of three children with a degree in education, who took the leap from public school.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Courtney

Hey! I’m Courtney–a homeschool mom of three and a proud blue-collar wife in Oklahoma. I have a degree in education and come from a long line of teachers, so classrooms were always a part of my world. I just never imagined my own home would become one.

After three years in public school, we made the leap into homeschooling, and here we are! I’m very type B, laid back, and definitely a go-with-the-flow kind of mom. Our days aren’t perfectly color-coded or aesthetic, but they’re real, flexible, and built around what works best for our family.

Math

I am definitely not an early riser, and honestly, school around here doesn’t usually start until after 10:00am. Once we get moving, we always start our homeschool day with math. We use an open-and-go curriculum, The Good and the Beautiful, and that has been a game changer for us. I’m not a natural planner, so having something I can literally open and start makes our mornings run so much smoother.

Reading + Writing

After math, we move into reading and writing. For about two and a half years we focused heavily on unit studies, but this year we realized we are getting pretty burnt out. Right now we’re intentionally taking a break and focusing on our core subjects–math, reading, and writing.

Flexible Rhythm

We don’t follow a strict schedule. We really operate on more of a rhythm, and that shift has made our homeschool feel so much less stressful. It’s flexible, realistic, and works well for our family in this season.

Our Homeschool Space

We do have a dedicated school shed that we love using when the weather cooperates. But since there’s no heat or air out there, during the colder months we migrate back into the kitchen and make it work where we are.

Year Round Homeschooling

We also choose to homeschool year-round. This allows us to take more breaks throughout the year without the pressure or guilt of falling behind. Our summer school is especially relaxed-usually just about two days a week-which gives us plenty of margin while still keeping learning consistent.

At the end of the day, our homeschool isn’t rigid or perfectly structured, but the rhythm we’ve built fits our family well and keeps learning moving forward.
