Homeschooling Day in the Life: Christina, Mom of 5, Homeschooling Preschool Through High School

Day in the life Christina

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Christina, mom of five and homeschooling preschool through high school!

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Good Morning!

Hi new (and old!) friends!

Here’s a fun fact about me–I’m a pretty decent “capture the moment,” person, but not the best “share in the moment” person. The capturing is quicker, but the sharing takes more time and attention away from the actual moment and the people in it, so I usually am an “after the fact” sharer.

SO, I’ll do my best to keep you caught up today, but if there’s a gap, know that I’ll be back—I’m just trying to be present. So here’s a recap of our morning so far:

I got up early (as usual) to work and get in some personal reading/devotional time. It’s usually the wrong balance of more work than devotion—I’m just being honest—I need to work on that. I started to draft an email to my newsletter subscribers, but didn’t get a chance to finish because my husband was home later than usual. I soaked up talking with him while I sipped a London Fog and made him coffee and breakfast. The kids are always pleasantly surprised if he’s still here when they wake up (he’s the fun one—swipe to see the laundry basket basketball training set up he made them. At least he found “silent” balls, bless his heart).

My eldest (17) left to go to work for a few hours as a lifeguard. This season has been a HUGE transition for me. It’s been hard, to be honest–the realization that this is my last year homeschooling him, and compromising on his work schedule (kinda regretting reading “Created For Work” with him…kinda kidding…). We’ll do a group lesson and devotional when he comes home this afternoon, to keep him connected still, and he’ll get to his independent work on his own time.

I found my littlest nugget lounging on the baskets of clean laundry that need to be sorted and delivered (we stopped pre-folding years ago—one of the best decisions I’ve made!) She turned five the other day, and that’s been a hard one for me too. The decorations are still up from celebrating her on Sunday. They look happy so they’re staying for now.

You’ll find we are not strict schedule/traditional homeschoolers. We are definitely more relaxed rhythm homeschoolers.

Movement as a Core Subject

This is what my youngest three did the first few hours of the morning—they MOVED.

We don’t have a large home and it gets COLD this time of year in upstate NY. Because of this we’ve designed our home in a way that embraces movement, both inside and outside. It’s not used as a reward or add-on “if,” it’s what we consider a healthy lifestyle for them. Their bodies need to MOVE! Here’s the thing—they are going to MOVE, so we can either embrace it or not!

We’ve been cooking, eating, painting, and doing independent work since about 10:30, but I’ll share more about that later!

The Rest of Our Day

After a morning of movement, the girls came in and did a watercolor lesson. Then they made a peanut butter banana smoothie, I made tortillas for our shredded chicken tacos, and my 13 year old did more independent work and some chores.

I did language arts with my 9 year old while my 5 year old traced letters. Then my oldest came home and we all watched World Watch news and did a Psychology lesson on the couch. The table is a mess and still needs to be cleaned. And then my 9 year old has ballet and my teens have youth group.

When we get home we’ll have “family time.” This is where we talk about our days, pray, read the Bible, and play a few worship songs, while one or more of us falls asleep before everyone heads to bed. Tomorrow is our skiing and snowboarding day. I’ll probably throw some chicken soup in the crock pot before I go to bed. We can bring it with us for lunch tomorrow.

I hope you’ve enjoyed following along with our day! Come follow me over at @rooted_homelife!

Thank you so much to Christina for sharing your family’s day with us!
