Homeschooling Day in the Life: Alicia, Veteran Homeschooling Mom of 18 years, and Founder of Learning Well Community

A normal day in our homeschooling with my 12th and 7th grader. Only a few more weeks, and then Hutchinson Academy will be at an all time low enrollment of just one student.

No matter how long I’ve been homeschooling, I’ll never want it to end.

I’ve seen homeschooling change a lot over these years, but for me, the reasons we began are the same reasons we remain…I wanted to be with my kids, not get the scraps at the end of the day. I wanted my kids to love to learn, not just cram and regurgitate. I wanted the flexibility of homeschooling, not to be beholden to the rules and schedule of the school. And I wanted to teach my kids the way *I* want them to learn, with a biblical worldview, rich literature, and memorable lessons.

Homeschooling is a lifestyle. It is in no way a mirrored entity of a classroom. We can and should prioritize our families accordingly.

Thanks for taking a peek into our day with us. ❤️

Meet Alicia

I’ve been homeschooling for about 18 years. I have four kids and two have graduated from our homeschool, so it’s just the girls and me and they’re in 12th and 7th grades…so almost down to just one.

We started homeschooling all those years ago for many reasons. I’ll forever be thankful for these years of homeschooling. Here’s a bit of what our days look like..

Early Mornings

I try to wake up around 6:30am and do a few things before we start school. A good walk (in the spring/fall), a workout, much coffee, time alone in my Bible, a load of laundry, getting ready.

Morning Meeting

We have started every morning like this for almost two decades now: Bible, something to make our brains word hard, something beautiful, and a rich read aloud.

Lessons

After our Morning Meeting, the girls get started on their other subjects. Each of them does their own Math, English, and Science. Then, together they work on history.

Afternoons

Our afternoons are for piano and instrument lessons, the tutor, time with friends, field trips, errands, ballet. But I try to keep Mondays and Fridays free for being home, cleaning, and rest.

Evenings

Dinner as a family, sharing about our days, sometimes a game or a show. Simple, unfussy, just how we like it.

Encouragement

Each night, I fill in the girls’ assignment notebooks for the next day. It makes mornings so much easier.

This is just one little peek at our day in the life. It may seem simple or mundane to some. But if I could, I would rewind and do it all over again. No regrets…just gratitude that I get to do this. Enjoy these sweet days, friend.
