Homeschooling Day in the Life: Alicia, Founder of Learning Well Community

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Alicia, veteran homeschooling mom and founder of Learning Well Community.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Good Morning!

Here’s a little look at our homeschool day in the life. Not 100% accurate because 1/2 my students are gone right now 😅 my senior daughter is working in SD this month and working on school there. (Perks of homeschooling!)

No matter how long I’ve been homeschooling, I’ll never want it to end. Holding on to these last several years with my 12yo and soaking it all up.

I’ve seen homeschooling change a lot over these years, but for me, the reasons we began are the same reasons we remain…I wanted to be with my kids, not get the scraps at the end of the day. I wanted my kids to love to learn, not just cram and regurgitate. I wanted the flexibility of homeschooling, not to be beholden to the rules and schedule of the school. And I wanted to teach my kids the way *I* want them to learn, with a biblical worldview, rich literature, and memorable lessons.

Homeschooling is a lifestyle. It is in no way a mirrored entity of a classroom. We can and should prioritize our families accordingly.

Hi, I’m Alicia!

I’ve been homeschooling for about 17 years. I have four kids and two have graduated from our homeschool, so it’s just the girls and me and they are in 12th and 7th grades. We started homeschooling all those years ago for many reasons. I’ll forever be thankful for these years of homeschooling. Here’s a bit of what our days look like…

Early Mornings

I try to wake up around 6:30am and do a few things before we start school. A good walk, a gym session, much coffee, time alone in my Bible, a load of laundry, getting ready.

Morning Meeting

We have started every day like this for almost two decades now: Bible, something to make our brains work hard, something beautiful, and a rich read aloud.

Lessons

After our Morning Meeting, the girls get started on their other subjects. Each of them does their own Math, English, and Science. Then, together they work on History.

Combined Lessons

A homeschool is a family, not divided grade levels. We are our own one-room schoolhouse. Subjects like history absolutely can (and should!) be combined to create a cohesion in the family, plus make it 10x easier on you as the homeschool mom. Everyone can work at their own ability level while studying the same people.

Afternoons

Our afternoons are full of activities, but I do try to keep at least one day free of obligations.

Evenings

Dinner as a family, sharing about our days, sometimes a game of Rummikub or a show, and every 30 years or so, we run outside in our pajamas to try and see the Northern Lights.

Encouragement

Each night I fill in the girls’ assignment notebooks for the next day. It makes mornings so much easier.

This is just one little peek at our day in the life. It may seem simple or mundane to some. But if I could, I would rewind and do it all over again. No regrets…just gratitude that I get to do this. Enjoy these sweet days, friend.
