It’s that time of year again! The new homeschool curriculum picks post is HERE! Summer is still in full swing. We’re still going to the lake every few days, bike rides, dinners outside, and the like, but in the background, I’m preparing for our 16th year of homeschooling.
So here are our new homeschool curriculum picks for the new school year 2023-24. This year I’ll be teaching my 12th grade son (sob!), 10th grade daughter, and 5th grade daughter. Included in the post I have everything we’ll be using from morning meeting to electives to extra curriculars. Enjoy!

OUR HOMESCHOOL PLANS FOR 2023-24

Morning Meeting Plans and Resources
We have always started our days with a family meeting. Here’s what we’ll cover in our Morning Meetings this year, we won’t do all of these things each day, but here are the resources we’ll use:
- Daily Calendar: I like to go over what our week looks like on Mondays, so we look over the calendar together.
- Brighter Day Press Cards: these look so good! Includes a hymn, daily prayer idea, and scripture to memorize
- Bible:
- We are always working through a book of the Bible. We read several chapters and then discuss. We have read through the entire OT and are currently in the Gospels.
- We also read one Proverbs each day to coincide with the day of the month.
- Truth and Grace catechism books
- Theology: The Ology by Marty Machowski (we have been working through this for the past year)
- God’s Amazing Creation by Kay Arthur for my youngest
- Bible Trivia (my kids LOVE this!)
- Read Aloud
- Multiplication Practice with my youngest

WHAT WE’RE READING THIS YEAR:
I always like to pick our family read alouds for the year, even though it hardly ever goes as planned and we deviate from the plan sometimes. That’s ok! We usually get around to reading most of them! Some choices are missionary stories, some are carried over from last year, and some are just for fun.

- The Penderwicks

AFTER THE MORNING MEETING, OUR WEEKS WILL LOOK LIKE THIS:
- Daily:
- Math lessons
- Language arts
- Electives for the high schoolers
- Homeschool band one day/week
- Art 1x/week or more!
- Fridays: Last year, with my youngest, we started something that I used to do years ago that helped me so much in our homeschool. We went back to a 4-day homeschool week. My older two still have their assignments, but they do those on their own on Fridays. And my youngest has no school that day. It helps so much to create space for more reading, art, projects, field trips, cooking/baking, sewing, and more!
For history and science for my youngest, I decided to do a block of time on one at a time. For instance, I could spend September on Ancient Egypt and then October and November on Science. I still need to actually lesson plan for the first term, but this is what I’m thinking…just doing one of these two subjects at a time instead of doing two days of history and two days of science like I’ve done in the past.
OUR HOMESCHOOL CURRICULUM PICKS BY SUBJECT:
MATH + LOGIC
We love doing logic each day in our homeschool. Sometimes we do this in the morning during our Morning Meeting. Other times, we do this instead of a math lesson or in addition to. We use a combination of workbooks and games.
My Senior will be doing college algebra this year. He’ll take this course through a local college.
My Sophomore will be doing Geometry.
And my 5th grader will be continuing on with Saxon Math!
We also use My Math Assistant to help make grading math easier!
If you’re interested in trying out Nicole the Math Lady for free, you can try her 7-day free trial! I hope you love her as much as we do!

My 12th grader will use:
- Mind Benders for High School
- College Algebra
Jack’s high school credit: 1 high school math credit and 3 college credits.
My 10th grader will use:
Sophia’s high school credit: 1 math
My 5th grader will use:
- Saxon 4
- Math Manipulatives
- Math games
- Mind Benders
High School Electives:
My high schoolers will be working on several electives this year, together and separately.
Elective: World Religions
My high schoolers will do this together. I’ll read several lessons per week and they will do the workbook activities on their own.
- World Religions and Cults
- World Religions and Cults Teacher’s Guide (this is where the worksheets are that we’ll use)
- We may add in some documentaries along the way as well.
- CLEP: my kids will take the CLEP test for this course at the end of the year to earn a college credit for it.
Jack and Sophia Elective Credit: 1 each and 3 college credit

Intro to Leadership
My 12th grader will be doing this college course as an elective. He’ll be taking this through a local college and using their resources.
Jack Elective Credit: 1 high school and 3 college credit
NEW HOMESCHOOL CURRICULUM PICKS FOR LANGUAGE ARTS:
Everyone needs different things this year so we are kind of all over the map. Here is what we’ll use:
My 12th grader will use:
- College Writing and Research Course: this will be through a local college
- British and World Literature from Compass Classroom: I’m really excited about this course. It is through Compass Classroom’s digital classroom. My Sophomore will be doing this class as well. They will read excerpts or the entirety of the following:
- The Odyssey
- Augustine’s Confessions
- The Divine Comedy
- Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
- Hamlet
- Paradise Lost
- Pride & Prejudice
- Heart of Darkness
- All the King’s Men
- and others
My plan for the British and World Literature is that they will take the CLEP test at the end of the year and earn a college credit for this class as well.
Jack’s high school credit: 1 high school credit for Writing and Research and 3 college credits. 1 high school credit for British Lit + 3 college credits.
My 10th grader will use:
- Writer’s Composition: I am building a course for her using the following resources:
- Spelling: I usually don’t do spelling with my high schoolers but she wanted to brush up on some spelling skills so we are using Spelling Workout level H
- British and World Literature (with my 12th grader) plus the CLEP at the end of the year.
Sophia’s Language Arts Credits: 1 high school for Writing and 1 high school credit for Brit Lit and 3 college credits

My 5th grader will use:
- Spelling Workout Level D
- Zaner-Bloser Cursive Handwriting
- First Language Lesson Level 4
- Paragraph Writing for Kids << a link to my review!

HISTORY
For my 12th and 10th graders:
We are going back to the ancients as a family this year and I’m super excited about it! This year my high schoolers are using Compass Classroom’s online program called Antiquity. They will create a portfolio as they go throughout the year. Each lecture gives them ideas to add to their portfolio and I’m really excited to see these come together. They will watch the lectures and complete assignments. I probably won’t have them do too much heavy reading since their other courses will require a lot!
Jack and Sophia’s high school credit: 1 for history
For my 5th grader:
My 5th grader will be doing Ancient History this year too! We’ll be using a variety of resources we already had on our shelves. This will be my 4th cycle through all the history cycles, which is CRAZY to me! So we had so many great things on our shelves already. Here is what we’ll use:
- The Story of the Ancient World will be the spine of our studies.
- Ancient Egypt: History Pockets
- Ancient Greece: Homeschool in the Woods Study (Here is my review on this study!)
- Ancient Rome: Homeschool in the Woods Study
- Genevieve Foster’s: Augustus Caesar’s World
- Classical Kids for activity ideas
- D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths: we’ll probably hang out on Greek Myths for a while as these are fun to study. You can read about our Greek Myth study years ago HERE!

SCIENCE + NATURE
I am not a great science mom, I fully admit it, for the last two years, we have finished a full science curriculum! Read about it here and here! And last year, my two high schoolers had a GREAT year studying health and nutrition. Read about that HERE!
This year my 5th grader will be using No Sweat Nature Classes a couple of times a month. We have used this program for YEARS and love it. We will also use their Nature Explorer guides as well. Here are the other science details:
For my 5th grader:
- No Sweat Nature Study
- Exploring Creation with Zoology 3: Land Animals. We will use the Journal as well.
My 10th grader will use:
- Apologia Biology’s Self-Paced Course. You can read my review HERE! I will also have her take the CLEP test at the end of this course as well.

Sophia high school credit: 1 for high school science and 3 for college credit
My 12th grader has all the science credits he needs, so he gets a break this year. 🙂
We also will use:
- Tinker Crates
- CuriosityStream
- NatureExplorer Guides
- Nature picture books
- Exploring Nature with Children
- Nature Walks + Guides

ART + MUSIC
Art is my favorite! I almost always make my own project right alongside the kids when we do our art. Usually we find time to do an art project on Friday afternoons. Here are a few resources we use.
- Chalk Pastels Membership site–if you want simple art projects that go with basically ANY subject you’re already studying, this is it! Their memberships are a huge value for our family! CLICK HERE for my three TOP reasons we love this membership!
- SQUILT Music Class is also on our list! We love these classes.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE
This year my high schoolers will be doing Latin for a foreign language credit. I found a course through Compass Classroom that looks excellent!
Jack and Sophia Credits: 1 high school credit
EXTRA FUN STUFF
- Homeschool band for all three kids
- Piano lessons for the girls
- American Heritage Girls
- Field Trips
- Doodle Crates
- Church groups
