Homeschooling Day in the Life: Brittany, Homeschooling Mom of One Who Prioritizes Unhurried School Days

A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.

Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Brittany, homeschooling mom to one who prioritizes unhurried school days.

We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.

We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!

Meet Brittany

They are a homeschooling family of 3 living in South Carolina. This is their 4th year as a homeschool family. They enjoy reading together, biking, hiking, going on adventures, spending time together in nature and with their local homeschool community.

Their favorite moments in homeschooling revolve around good books, wonder filled days, travel, joyful moments, yummy treats, cozy blankets, read alouds on the couch by the fire, library visits and park meet ups with friends, but most importantly a solid firm foundation built on Jesus Christ.

Early Mornings

I try to wake up before my son. But, if not, I still remain intentional about slow, simple mornings. I enjoy a warm cup of coffee (mixed with chocolate protein) while I read my Bible and listen to hymns softly in the background. This moment helps me set my day.

Breakfast + Bible

I then prepare my son’s breakfast while he completes his morning routine (getting dressed/making bed). While he eats breakfast I read the Bible to him, afterwards we typically watch the corresponding video and do a coloring page or crossword puzzle. We are utilizing the The Biggest Story Bible Curriculum by Crossway.

Following this we clean up the kitchen together then go outside to play. Biking is our current morning favorite.

Lessons

We operate on a 4 day school week. Fridays are reserved for field trips, errands and fun activities. Our daily lessons typically follow this pattern:

Hymn, Latin, Math, and Literature

We are really enjoying Dart by Brave Writer. We rotate days with History and hands on Science. During our lesson time we incorporate several brain breaks, movements and of course snacks ( most days this is charcuterie board style). In Autumn these lessons often take place outdoors in the sunshine. One of our reasons for homeschooling as a family was to be able to allow our son to spend plenty of time playing outdoors and enjoying childhood.

After snack time my son reads independently from his book basket or listens to audiobooks via his Yoto. Then starts his piano practice. While he works independently I take a break to recharge. Then I prepare lunch.

Afternoons

Our homeschool day closes with lunchtime and a review of our manner of the week. Afterwards he is free to focus on personal interest- building Legos, building planes, working on soccer and baseball skills or hanging out with friends.

Encouragement

Each family rhythm is unique. Do what works for your family and do not be afraid to pivot. Seasons change. Learn to prioritize the things that matter most.
