Boredom Over Busyness: Here’s How We’re Tackling That This Summer
Recently on Instagram, I talked about being purposeful about what we say yes to and filling our calendars with way too much busyness. I mentioned that I am much more interested in creating more space in our schedule this summer and next school year. When we have more space, we create room for creativity, imagination, and more. Sometimes there is a step between the busyness and creating…boredom.
Boredom is OK! Some of the most creative times in my kids’ lives have been born from times of boredom. With summer upon us, we might be tempted to hurry up and fill our days with sports, scheduled events, and playdates. But before we do that, let me encourage you to hold off…and let them get bored first.
Creating a Rich Environment for Boredom
Though we don’t want to have to handhold every minute of every day to keep them from being bored, we do have to lay a foundation and create a rich environment in which their boredom can blossom into something amazing.

A camera for them to take their own photos, paints and craft supplies of all kinds, books on CD with a CD player, dress up clothes and more!
We can also create a rich environment for boredom with a little help. This is why I love KiwiCo. They create monthly kits that will bust your kids’ boredom in minutes.
This month, KiwiCo provided us with some of their kits to try out: the Doodle Crate and the Tinker Crate. KiwiCo provides tons of lines for different ages and interests so there is never a question of finding one you like. I must say though that we have decided the Doodle Crate and Tinker Crates are our very favorites.
KiwiCo Crates Instill Creativity
Not only do each of these crates provide a main activity that will take your child some time and challenge them to use their creativity to complete. But there are also options and supplies for further projects too for all ages and interests. They encourage further investigation on the topic and further creativity with more project ideas.
This month, Vera made a robot from the Tinker Crate she received. It was amazing timing too because we had just gotten home from a busy day and I needed to put away groceries and get dinner cooking. I suggested she start her Tinker Crate project and she plopped down in the living room and got to work on it.
She was quietly working for so long I had to check and make sure she was doing ok! Not only was she ok, but she was watching her newly-constructed robot walk back and forth across the floor. She was so proud!
Then, a couple of weeks later, on a rainy afternoon, the girls sat down with Doodle Crate and created some amazing paper mache bowls! I loved how they turned out!
